Grocery Price Index

Food prices at your local grocery store have been on the rise for quite some time and people are feeling the financial pinch more than ever. As consumers look for creative ways to stretch their hard-earned dollars, there are many reasons why people rely on more than one grocery store to meet their grocery needs, including:

  • Stock inventory shortages

  • Price sensitivity

  • Quality of product may not be desirable

  • Certain products may only be offered at some grocers (to meet individual dietary requirements)

  • Familiarity with key staff and loyalty to certain stores

  • An overall pleasant shopping experience

  • Corporate vision, mission, goals, and philosophy

This page is dedicated to bringing awareness to the price disparity that exists between identical products offered at various grocers and between brand name items and their store brand counterparts.  This page is not designed to compare weekly specials, nor is it intended to dollar cost average on products that have a multi-purchase offer at a specific grocery store.

The table below is a static matrix summary of the grocery price disparity index. Click here to access the interactive version which allows you to search, sort and filter the complete dataset to provide you with various and deeper insights into store-specific prices.

When reviewing the grocery price disparity index, please keep the following considerations in mind:

  • We have used the term "store brand" to imply the grocery store house brand (ie: FreshCo/Compliments, Walmart/Great Value, Zehrs/President's Choice, etc.).

  • For example, suppose all the flavours of a specific brand name product (such as salad dressing) are the same price, in that case, the product name is listed as 'salad dressing' and the appropriate brand name will indicate the manufacturer. This approach has been applied throughout the dataset.
